Cable car passengers, sight-seeing in the Georgian city of Chiatura, were rescued after being stranded in mid-air for twelve hours. Sixteen people waited hours as rescue workers tried to work out how to get them down. Specialist help eventually arrived from the capital Tbilisi, some 230 kilometers (145 miles) away. It's thought a cable fault halted the cabin mid air. Operators managed to use handbrakes to stop the cabin from falling but then couldn't move it to safety. Eventually the passengers were lowered by rope, one by one, to the ground below.
