On September 2, 1957--the day before Little Rock Central High School was to admit nine African-American teenagers as part of a gradual integration plan--Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus ordered state militia troops into the capital, allegedly to prevent violence. The next day, the National Guard surrounded the school and blocked the access of the African-American students. Meanwhile, an angry white mob had gathered in support of the governor's stand against desegregation, and the African-American students only narrowly escaped bodily harm. A federal court and President Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered Faubus to comply with integration plans, and eventually the governor agreed to step aside. He did nothing, however, to disperse the mobs that were still surrounding Central High School and vowing death to any African American who tried to enter.
